This exhibit will show the beauty of many small details in nature all around us. The exhibit encompasses either small animals and plants or parts of them that cannot fully be appreciated by the naked eye. Most of the photos featured in the exhibit were taken with the aid of a macro lens, others were taken as close up views with regular lens.

Saint Helena Island, C Ride, 20 Miles     GPS Ride Map
With Tour of Penn Center ($5 donation)

Directions to Start: Penn Center, 16 Penn Center Cir W, St. Helena Island, SC [MapLink]

Description of Ride: St. Helena's Island is a rural island seaward of Beaufort. Home of the Gullah Culture and the first experiments to educate the freed slaves. Home of the historic Penn Center School and Museum. The island is a mixture of small communities, vast tomato and sod farms, pecan orchards, abundant, untrimmed massive oak trees and a couple of plantations. Much of the island consists of "Heir Lands." Clear titles are impossible to obtain so the island has resisted development.

Excellent biking, little traffic, few dogs, great Lowcountry scenery. At the tip of our biking route by the water, you can see the former site of Fort Tremont, a Spanish American Was fort built in 1899, formerly protecting the Port Royal Naval Station which in 1916, became the Parris Island Marine Training Center. Another historic site is the Chapel of Ease Road, with classic tabby ruins, and a stop at the Seaside Mini Market, unique in itself and a chance for refreshments.

Terry is presently arranging for a very short guided tour(one you will not want to miss) of Penn Center, where we will all meet at 9:00 am. If he can arrange it, there will be a small donation of $5 for this amazing tour. If you haven't visited Penn Center, you are really missing a piece of our Gullah culture. After the short tour, we will begin our 20 mile biking route on this lovely island.

North End Scavenger Hunt, C Ride

Are you ready for this ride? My crew has come up with what we think is the most creative ride of the year. We have planned, specifically for you C riders,(but all riders are welcome), a scavenger bike ride, on Saturday, August 15, 9:00 am, meeting in the parking lot behind Main Street Cafe. This is how it will work:

1. There will be teams of 2, so bring a biking partner. Be sure and select a partner that is creative, thinks well, and is a good navigator. I am sure you are all of these, but 2 minds work better than one. If you don't have a partner, never fear, we will pair you with another. Any type of bike will work for this ride.

2. There will be no ride leader, you and your partner are on your own, not only to locate the clues but to also plan your route.

3. Although there is not a time limit for this hunt, we will have lunch around 12:00, or earlier if all of you return. In case you get lost, just kidding, can't find all the clues, or give up and take off and ride, please be back by 12:00 or earlier.

4. I rode the course of this hunt, and it is about 12 miles long, give or take the length of the route you choose. But it will take time to find the clues and determine your route. It took me 1 1/2 hours to ride the route but I wasn't stopping and looking as you will be doing. The course is on the north end of the island.

5. We will give you the clues when we meet Sat., 9 am, for the ride.

6. One of you will take pictures of the found clues, and the other will be in the picture of the clue for proof.

7. Upon your return to Main Street, you and your partner, for proof of finding the clues, will show another team the pictures taken, and they will do the same in return.

8. No prizes, just the honor of winning in our first scavenger hunt and perhaps, posting your names with your pictures on our website. Maybe even Facebook! If this works, we will do another one later one, with even more clues. This island is full of possible clues.

9. The clues are under lock and key with Price Waterhouse, but I can be bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen many of you C riders since last fall. This is a ride that is not long and can be done at your own pace. We want to see you back riding with us. I have about 70 of you on my email list and hope to see a goodly showing for this ride. Of course, this ride is open to all riders. And as I said, it is not a race. We just want to have fun, meet new people, and socialize.

Please RSVP by no later than Aug. 8th, we really need to have an idea of numbers planning to hunt with us. The sooner the better for us. If we have a large showing, we will have to put our minds together to plan the timing so we all won't be going to the same place.

I will be in Colorado from the 31st to the 10th (grandchildren and hopefully cooler weather) and can always be reached by email or cell, but am giving you the emails and cells of our committee.

We really have had a lot of fun planning this and we know you will have fun too.
