Annual Ride of Silence     Press Release     Poster

Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

WHY DOES THIS ORGANIZATION EXIST?

  •  To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
  •  To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
  •  To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

On May 21, 2014 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.

The Ride of Silence...

Tonight we number many but ride as one
In honor of those not with us, friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, sons
With helmets on tight and heads down low,
We ride in silence, cautious and slow
The wheels start spinning in the lead pack
But tonight we ride and no one attacks
The dark sunglasses cover our tears
Remembering those we held so dear
Tonight's ride is to make others aware
The road is there for all to share
To those not with us or by our side,
May God be your partner on your final ride

To Participate in the Ride of Silence, contact John Marcinowski
Email: CW5ski1@verizon.net
Cell: (412) 360-9838

For those wishing to participate in the local RoS organized by KABC to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways, please arrive at the Street Meet Parking Lot with your bicycle, helmet (mandatory), lights highly recommended and black arm-band (if you have one). There will be a ceremony, sign-in and safety briefing between 6:30 and 7:00. The 9 mile police escorted ride will roll out promptly at 7:00 after Mayor Drew Laughlin addresses the participants. The ride will leave the parking lot and head South on 278 (at a speed of 10-12 mph) to the new stop light at Queens Way and back to Street Meet for fellowship - food and beverage are at your own expense.

9:00 AM Hunting Island Ride

Join us for a great beach ride and Fripp Island Excursion!

On Saturday, October 4, we’ll meet at the Hunting Island Nature Center at 9:00. You’ll need $5 for the parking fee for your car. At about 9:15 we’ll begin our ride by riding on Hunting Island beach (it will be low tide). We’ll see the Lighthouse and continue riding to the campground, approximately 3.5 miles of beach riding. From there, we’ll ride on Hwy 21 to Fripp Island. En route, we’ll stop at the Marsh Boardwalk. Or…if the group decides they want to retrace our route along the beach, we’ll skip Hwy 21.

Estimated 8 miles round trip.

Once we get to Fripp, each rider will need to show his or her driver’s license. Fripp is a private resort community and we have received special permission to enter and ride around the Island. We’ll ride to the Fripp Island Marina, then to the Ocean Creek Golf Club, on to Wardle’s Landing, then to the Ocean Point Golf Links. I’m estimating all of this to be about 10 miles.

We’ll return to our cars at Hunting Island and then drive to a lunch place yet to be decided.

9:30 AM Ogeeche Canal Society Museum Ride B/C 25 Miles

Start location: Ogeechee Museum, 681 Fort Argyle Rd, Savannah, GA

Directions to Start: Take 278 to I-95 south to Exit 94. At end of ramp turn Right onto Ft. Argyle Rd (204) and continue 2.3 miles. The museum is on left. Park in lot.

We will tour starting on the southside of Savannah and head up into Pooler. We will make a final stop at the museum before lunch. The museum guide will show a short video followed by a brief tour of the museum and a walk to the canal.

Canal Description: In the early 1800s, a 16 mile canal was built by black slaves and Irish laborers to link the Ogeechee and Savannah Rivers, and this became an important waterway for transporting goods such as cotton and rice until 1890. It is being restored by the local community and is slowly being reconnected at both ends. The locks and brick channel ways are partially visible...and can give you an idea of how wide and deep this canal was. Within a few hundred yards of the canal and running parallel is Jenckes Road....laid down soon after the Civil War which connected Bryan County across the Ogeechee to Savannah. The remains of pilings in the river that supported abridge that was once there are still clearly visible...and its easy to imagine foot and horse drawn cart traffic slowly traversing this road.. This is basically swamp with narrow ridges of higher ground. The area is filled with mature cypress and river oaks and the ground littered with little yellow and red fruits called Ogeechee Limes. Today on Ft. Argyle Road just east of I-95, there is a center which preserves a small portion of the original canal along with an informative museum and nature center.
