Kickin' Asphalt Bicycle Club

Hilton Head Island, SC

blue line

Looking back on 2017 we can be happy that we were able to conduct so many of our rides with little interference from the weather.  Hurricane Irma and our annual rained-out Daufuskie trip excepted!

Now is the time to renew your Kickin’ Asphalt Bicycle Club membership.  New this year is online renewal, registration and payment.  Please be sure to go to our web site and follow the prompts for your renewal.

This year has started out a bit cold and icy, but Spring is just around the corner and we need to be ready for KABC organized rides as well as for our personal training rides.  Make sure you have your bikes in top running condition for putting a lot of miles on them when the weather permits.

Membership Meeting January 24, 2018 At Hinchey’s on Pope Avenue Cocktails start at 5:30, followed by dinner at 6 pm. The business portion, during which our new Board will be installed, commences at 6:30. The meeting will conclude with a presentation by our featured speaker, DG Vietch of Road Fish Bike Shop at 7. DG will be speaking about new cycling technology, safety devices, clothing, and techniques. The meeting should conclude at 7:30 pm.

The winds of change are blowing on the Board of Directors of KABC. We have lost some very experienced members and added some rookies. Our Board is now composed as follows:

President:  Steve Alfred
Vice President:  Mike Hills
Treasurer:  Tom Sharp
Secretary:  Linda Kuhlman

Committee Chairs
Ride Director:  Mike Oeser
Social:  Kirsten Hotchkiss
Communications:  Pat Bellock
Education & Safety:  Linda Warnock
Membership:  Chris Brigham
Merchandise:  Betsy McCoy
Webmaster: Dave McCoy
Past President:  Joan Lemoine
Pedal Hilton Head:  Russ Whiteford
Out of Town Trips:  Terry Herron

As new Board Members dig in, we need to express our appreciation to Gina Tjersland, John Burling and Carmen Oliver for the hard work they have done to sustain our organization.  They have been willing to fulfill the roles of their own Board positions as well as tackle the responsibilities of Board positions that have been vacant. At this time we need to be especially appreciative to Ron Knight whose vision, dedication and hard work started this club 11 years ago.  Ron has been a staunch promoter of quality biking on the island and of the club’s contribution to that goal.

In addition to our weekly, Saturday rides in the low country, there are a few rides that require additional planning for lodging, etc.  These rides are listed below with additional information available either from the links on our web page or directly from Terry Herron:

Southeast Bicycle Symposium March 22-24

This year’s symposium will take place at the Hilton Head Island Beach Hotel.  People who attended last year’s inaugural symposium were very impressed with the presentations and information they received.  For complete information regarding this event, refer to our website or contact Frank Babel.

Our weekly rides provide such a wide variety of courses both on and off island.  Some of these rides require a drive of 40 minutes or more to the starting point so please observe the following policy for such rides:

RSVP Policy - In fairness to our Ride Leaders we are instituting an RSVP request for rides outside the HHI/Bluffton area.  Simply reply "yes" if you are coming to the ride.  If there are no responses by 7:00 am Saturday, the Ride Director will cancel the ride so the Ride Leader will not head out unnecessarily. Thank you for your cooperation.

KABC is increasing its presence on Facebook. Be sure to “Like” our page and send us your bicycling photos and events to be posted. We would love to hear from you.
