Ride Schedulecalendar

Each ride has an A, B, C ride classification. See the Ride Classifications page to determine which ride is best for you. Call for Ride Leaders! Contact Steve Alfred at president@kickinasphalt.info.

RSVP Policy - In fairness to our Ride Leaders we are instituting an RSVP request for rides outside the HHI/Bluffton area.  Simply reply "yes" if you are coming to the ride.  If there are no responses by 7:00 am Saturday, the Ride Director will cancel the ride so the Ride Leader will not head out unnecessarily. Thank you for your cooperation.

Inclement Weather Notification Procedure - When the weather looks bad, the Ride Director will consult with the Ride Leader that morning before 7 AM.  If we decide to cancel the ride, a ride cancellation notice 2 hours before the ride start.  This will normally be 7 AM.  If there is no announcement, the ride is on.  Our overriding concern will always be ride safety.

Ride of Silence
Distance & Classification: C

Start time: Meet at 6:30 p.m. (Ride starts promptly at 7:00 p.m.)

Directions to start: Street Meet (Port Royal Plaza, 95 Mathews Drive, Hilton Head Island)

Ride Leader: John Marcinowski 412.360.9838

Description: On Wednesday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m., the annual Ride of Silence (ROS) will begin in North America and roll around the globe.  In 2003, the first ROS took place in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. The Dallas ride drew 1,000 cyclists through word of mouth and email communication over a period of only ten days.  In 2015, there were 340 such rides in 49 states, 20 countries and 7 continents.

The ROS is a free ride that hopes to raise cycling awareness during the month of May (National Bike Month) to motorists, the general public, police, traffic engineers, insurance companies, and city officials.  The ROS promotes a "share the road" message and works to educate the public on the right of both cyclists and motorists to legally use the roads in a safe manner.  Many cyclists are scared or threatened daily due to motorists passing too closely, honking or yelling at cyclists to get off the road.  These behaviors are unsafe and illegal.  Bicyclists are considered drivers of a vehicle and have the same responsibilities and rights to the roads as motorists.

For those wishing to participate in the local ROS organized by Kickin' Asphalt Bicycle Club (KABC) to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways, please arrive at the Street Meet parking lot in Port Royal Plaza with bicycle, lights are highly recommended and black arm-band.  Helmets are mandatory. There will be a ceremony, sign-in and safety briefing between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.  The 9-mile police escorted ride will roll out promptly at 7:00 p.m.  The ride will leave the parking lot and head south on U.S. 278 (at a speed of 10-12 mph)  to the new stop light at Queens Way and back to Street Meet for fellowship after.

The total ride is 18-20 miles, slow to medium paced. Group will stay together, unless a large group needs to be divided. When the ride arrives at the waterfront in Port Royal (mid-point), some riders may choose to “ride fast” back to their cars in downtown Beaufort, as an option.
