ABOUT US

KABC organizes and promotes safe group bicycle rides and holds social activities for our cyclists.

We were founded in September, 2006 and now have more than 180 members. We are a non-profit bicycle touring club open to cycling enthusiasts in and around Southern Beaufort County, South Carolina.

We are affiliated with the League of American Bicyclist and Palmetto Cycling Coalition of South Carolina.

Hilton Head Island has been recognized as one of the top 25 bicycle-friendly communities in the United States and one of 21 to achieve “Gold-Level” status for its commitment to being a bicycle friendly community. The Bicycle Friendly Community award was announced on June 10, 2015 by the League of American Bicyclists.

The Town of Hilton Head Island is the only Gold-Level community in the Southeast and only one of two on the East Coast, according to the League's list of award recipients.

We currently ride most Saturday mornings, starting at different locations around Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort. Rides usually range between 15 and 40 miles and average 12-18 mph, depending on the Ride Classification level.

Safety First! Fitness, Fun and Food to Follow...

We require helmets to be worn on all rides, we encourage brightly colored clothing and remember your water bottle!

We usually meet for lunch at a local restaurant following our rides. Come out and ride with us once before you decide to join our club. See you soon!

hhi gold awardThe League of American Bicyclists announced that Hilton Head Island had been designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) at the Gold level by the League of American Bicyclists, up from the silver level received four years ago. We are the only community in South Carolina and the entire Southeast to reach the Gold level, and one of only 21 nationwide.

This is a major accomplishment and we're honored to be part of such a community.

Biking Ambassador Program Seeks Volunteers for 2018 Tourist Season

The Biking Ambassador Program is continuing this year and is looking for community volunteers to assist our efforts. The volunteer program was started by the Town of Hilton Head’s Bicycle Advisory Committee as part of its “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation.

The goal of the program is to enhance the safety and general quality of bike and leisure trails throughout the island, for the enjoyment of bicyclists and others who use them. Our services to the community include providing trail maps and safety flyers and assisting cyclists with their questions. Volunteers typically ride two hour shifts on Sundays or Mondays primarily during the busy summer season from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. They may also “post” themselves at the map kiosks to answer questions.

All Ambassadors must undergo a two-hour training session and wear identifying yellow vests or t-shirts marked “HHI Biking Ambassadors.” Training sessions have typically been conducted at the Palmetto Dunes Fire Station in May and June; 2018 dates will be communicated in the spring. If you would like further information about the program or volunteer opportunities, please contact Carmen Oliver at hhibikingambassadors@gmail.com
